General Information On Allegra D
Allegra D provides relief to a patient from symptoms of seasonal allergy, including runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, itchy throat, or nasal congestion.
The medicine is a combination of two drugs, Pseudoephedrine and Fexofenadine. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant which causes blood vessels of the nasal passage to shrink as dilated vessels may lead to nasal congestion. Fexofenadine belongs to the class of antihistamines, and it works by reducing the effects of natural chemicals that cause allergic reactions in the body. These natural chemicals, known as histamines, are responsible for causing watery eyes, runny nose, itching, or sneezing.
Patients less than 12 years of age should not use this drug, as Allegra D contains high amounts of Pseudoephedrine which can harm them.
Side effects of Allegra D
Allegra D should be used with caution by patients already suffering from a kidney disease, diabetes, glaucoma, hypertension, heart disease, urination problems, enlarged prostate or thyroid disorder.
Allegra D patients may commonly experience dry mouth, loss of appetite, nausea, constipation, stomach pain, skin rash, itching, insomnia, restlessness and excitement, dizziness, problems with concentration or memory, or ringing in the ears. These side effects are short lived and can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, you should notify your doctor if any of these become too troublesome.
You should discontinue using Allegra D and inform your doctor immediately if you develop fast, uneven, or pounding heartbeat, hallucinations, easy bleeding or bruising, decreased or stopped urination, fever, body ache, unusual weakness, symptoms of flu or severe anxiety, dizziness, restlessness, or nervousness.
In some cases, Allegra D can also lead to an increase in blood pressure. Symptoms of such a condition include blurred vision, severe headache, chest pain, seizure, numbness, or trouble concentrating. Seek immediate medical help if you witness any of these symptoms, as they may need to be treated at once.
Dosage of Allegra D
Allegra D is available in a 12 hour and 24 hour extended release tablet form. If you are using Allegra D 12 hour tablets, you will need to take one tablet twice a day. If you are using Allegra D 24 hour tablets, you will be recommended to take one tablet once a day.
You will have to take the tablet on an empty stomach one hour before or two hours after food. Avoid consuming high-fat foods during Allegra D treatment, as doing so may decrease the absorption of the drug in your bloodstream. This may lead to a reduction in its effectiveness.
The Allegra D tablets need to be swallowed whole. Crushing, chewing or breaking them may result in excessive drug absorption in your bloodstream, which may worsen the side effects.
